Cloverfield – the movie, or was it the video?

Felt really burnt today, so I decided to give myself a little break by doing what Singaporeans do best, catch a movie:D Initially we wanted to watch that korean Chef movie, but when I saw the movie poster of Cloverfield, I thought, hey, that looks more interesting. In a matter of minutes, we were in the cinema.

Movie started, with scenes taken off the view of an amatuer videographer. The shaky movements (just like Blairwitch project) on the big screen gave me a big headache after awhile. I thought, well, maybe it’s just the beginning. And yes, I’m right, it’s just the BEGINNING of a one and the half hour worth of “amatuer video’s point of view”!!! Halfway through the movie, I just closed my eyes and listen to the dialogue instead. My stomach started revolting, not from the gory scenes, but the amount of camera shake and quick panning movements.

I walked out of the cinema feeling sick, very sick. I was close to puking. My friend told me it’s rated 2 out of 5 stars in some local review. I asked, “did they miss out the negative sign in front?”. Maybe some will like it, but I’m seriously not into this. If you intend to get an MC, then it’s highly recommended. Take the front rows if you need more than 1 day.

Now I know, never judge a movie by it’s poster. And I thought D-wars was bad…

*burps*… *runs for toilet*

A cure for insomnia

No.5, 5 more in-camps to go! Cleared my IPPT, cleared my range! The new range format is really quite challenging.

And to those having insomnia, I have a solution. Wear your no.4 uniform. It’s proven, you can sleep anytime, anywhere with it:)

Sit ups?

THE MOST CRIPPLING OF THEM ALL
——————————
It looks like a laid back sport, until the lower back gives out

Not long after an underwhelming showing by the British contingent at the
Wimbledon tennis championships in July, the British Journal of Sports
Medicine published the results of a study that suggested to beleaguered
English tennis fans that things are only going to get worse.

In the study, researchers from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital
scanned the spines of 33 elite adolescent tennis players. None of them had
reported back pain. But their backs, it turned out, were a mess – they had
backs 60 years older than they were.

But as many of us know from debilitating first-hand experience, back
problems don’t afflict just teenage tennis players. According to various
studies, at least a third of all competitive football players will hurt
their lower backs during play, as will a third of gymnasts and 25 per cent
of serious rowers. About 40 per cent of divers will develop a spinal
stress fracture, and many cyclists will experience constant, grinding back
pain while riding. The harshest sport, however, seems to be golf.

Ninety per cent of injuries to professional golfers involve the lower back
and the neck, and almost 80 per cent of professionals will miss at least
one tournament because of back pain.

If you’re a runner, do a backbend of thanksgiving: Runners statistically
have a lower risk than most athletes of developing back problems. But for
everyone else, the news is … painful.

Many lower back problems are caused by the very athleticism that modern
sports demand. Consider the forces applied to the lower back during
certain activities: The torque created by a proper golf swing can produce
almost 770kg of pressure on the lower spine. Rowers can put about 590kg of
pressure on their backs at the catch of their stroke. And the “peak
compressive load” created by a football lineman slamming into his opponent
can be close to 900kg.

Having a strong back, you will be happy to hear, means not doing sit-ups.
Ever.  “Sit-ups are not healthy for the back,” said Mr Michael Higgins,
the director of athletic-training education at Towson University in
Maryland and the author of several academic articles about back injuries
in athletes.”They can severely compress the lumbar spine.”

Abdominal crunches, on the other hand, in which you raise your head and
trunk slightly from the ground without pulling yourself upright, improve
back health significantly. “Crunches build core endurance and strength
without stressing the spine,” he added.

If your back aches for more than a few weeks, or if the pain is acute or
radiating, visit a doctor. “Most back injuries will clear up on their own
within six to eight weeks, if you rest adequately,” Mr Vijay Vad, a sports
medicine specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City
said. “Surgery is very rarely necessary, maybe in 3 to 5 per cent of
cases.” – nyT

Is SAF ever going to listen to the experts? Although it’s my pet event, but I wouldn’t mind doing one less.

When lightning strikes…

… it means break time for me. That’s because I’m always phobic about blackouts due to lightning strikes when I’m working on the computer. First, it means data lost (even though I’ve installed UPS, but still… be on the safe side. More importantly, it means weather is going to be cool, so it’s time to take a nap. With thunderstorms dominating the weather charts over the past week, I’ve been, spending alot of time in front of TV instead.

I realized that History/Discovery/NGeo Channels are showing some really kick ass documentaries during the afternoon segments. So much so that I’ve stopped tuning to sports for almost a week (except for the Brazilian F1). Some of the interesting titles that I’ve watched over the week.

– Secrets of the black box: KAL007

1983, at the height of the cold war, Korean Airlines KAL007 flew into Russian airspace and got shot down by Russian interceptors. The brief description is enough to glue me on to the TV screen for a good 2 hours.

– Last flight to Kuwait: BA149

Just hours before Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, British Airways BA149, carrying suspected British covet operations members flew into the warzone, even though they should’ve been informed of the war mid air. That fateful flight left hundreds of civillian passengers stranded in Kuwait, held hostage by Saddam’s regime.

– Aloha flight (can’t remember the exact title)

Midway through the flight, the part of the fuselage broke off, immediately ejecting 1 air stewardess. The pilots managed to land flight safely. Picture this, the aircraft becomes a convertible, how scary is that? Now, there’s a reason when they announce, “the seatbelts signs are now off, however we advise passengers to keep their seatbelts on at all times…”.
